VICTOR

The look on Victor’s face alerted Nick to his inner freak-out.

“Meeting room. Now,” Nick commanded.

Victor nodded and whipped out his phone. He gave one final glimpse toward Gus and Riggs before hurrying out the door. He had his cousin on the line by the time he made it down the hall.

“You heard?” Eduard said as a greeting.

“I did.”

“Loch freaked, which in turn made Sawyer panic, which sent Draco into an uproar.”

“I can imagine.”

“They’re on their way. Since I know exactly how the discussion will go, I chose to remain home.”

Victor grunted, wishing he could do the same.

“What’s the big deal?” Nick roared from the doorway. “Why’d you turn ten shades of pale over some fairy lady coming?”

Eduard cackled into the phone. “Have fun!”

“That Degas hanging in your library? Mine.” Victor ended the call and turned to stare down an obviously annoyed Nick.

“What’d I miss?” Jedrek said sleepily from the doorway. He hooked his chin over Nick’s shoulder and wrapped his arms around his mate’s waist.

“The fae are sending some chick on behalf of the Lady and Victor’s having an ulcer about it.”

Jedrek frowned and looked at Victor for further explanation.

“Maida.”

“Fucking hell,” Jedrek groaned. “Some lady, Nick? Really?”

“What? That’s what the little flying-wingy thing said.”

“Sprite, love. They’re called sprites. They are the messengers of the queen.”

“Yeah.”

“Don’t play dumb, Nick,” Victor said. “It’s beneath you.”

The alpha had spent time in the fae realm. This wasn’t completely new territory for him, and the fact that he acted like he didn’t understand any of the nuances annoyed Victor to no end. Nick might not have grown up part of their world, but he’d experienced enough at this point to know better.

Nick scowled but didn’t argue. Victor counted it as a small victory.

“And Maida is a notorious Valkyrie. Her powers are unrivaled, to say the least.”

Nick’s frown deepened. “But the Lady sent her.”

Victor didn’t know how to explain the intricacies of the fae world to Nick. He saw things in black-and-white, but the fae dealt in shades of gray. Victor knew little to nothing about the Lady of the Lake that everyone referred to, but he knew more than he cared to admit about the fae in general. Nick seemed to trust the Lady implicitly. One day, Victor needed to hear the full story of what had happened during their time in the fae realm. He wouldn’t trust any fae as completely as Nick seemed to trust the mysterious Lady of the Lake.

“And that is a good sign. However, the Lady isn’t the one who is here. We must be very cautious, Nick. Please believe me when I tell you that this is serious.”

Nick scowled. “I hear you. I just don’t get it.”

Jedrek intervened. “Remember that meme thing you showed me? The one with the little girl with the evil grin and the burning house?”

“Yeah,” Nick said with a laugh. “The one that said I saw a spider. Funny shit.” It took Nick a second. “Maida burns down the house when she sees a spider, huh?”

“Exactly,” Victor confirmed.
